DeLauro Statement on Civil Protests

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement in response to civil protests in Connecticut and across the nation over the weekend, following the killing of George Floyd:

"The country continues to reel in the wake of the tragic and senseless death of George Floyd last week. Over the weekend, we saw protests from coast to coast calling for justice and saying enough is enough. The American people are demanding change. The issues of systemic racism, unequal access to education, unfair hiring practices, incidents of police brutality, and distrust between law enforcement and communities of color cannot continue. This violence has taken the lives of fathers, sons, mothers, and daughters."

"It is time elected leaders take action, not encourage violence and stoke fear. This President and those in his administration have sat idly by while relationships between law enforcement and communities of color have continued to fray and unrest persists all over the country."

"As Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.' I am proud to join my colleagues in cosponsoring an important resolution led by Rep. Ayanna Pressley condemning police brutality. I will continue to support and advocate for changes to address these fundamental issues because now is not the time to be silent. Now we must work toward making the changes to create a more perfect union for all Americans."
